Roving Naturalist Program

NOVA Parks is pleased to offer a nature interpretation program in many NOVA Parks including Potomac Overlook Regional Park, Meadowlark Botanical Gardens, Pohick Bay Regional Park, Bull Run Regional Park, Fountainhead Regional Park, Occoquan Regional Park, Algonkian Regional Park, Temple Hall Farm Regional Park, Winkler Botanical Preserve and all five NOVA Parks waterpark facilities (in-season only). Through guided nature walks, hikes, canoe and kayak tours, night explorations, stream and pond studies, and live animal programs, participants gain the opportunity to discover our native flora and fauna in a safe and fun environment. Programs are catered to kids, adults, and anyone interested in the natural world.

Playgrounds

The W&OD features playgrounds suitable for kids of all ages. Located at various place along the route, playgrounds feature multiple slides and levels, multiple levels, stair cases and a swing set, over a sandy area. The play areas are open year round weather permitting.

Location: Locations include playgrounds immediately off the trail in Purcellville and two small playgrounds next to each other west of Lee Highway on the Arlington/Falls Church line.  There are several other playgrounds West End Park in Falls Church and Trailside Park in Herndon for example adjacent to the trail and open to the public.

Batting Cage

We feature six baseball cages, including Slow, Medium and Fast pitch speeds; and three softball cages, including Slow and Fast pitch speeds. Bats and helmets are provided free of charge. Helmets with face cages are required for use in all cages. Closed-toed shoes are required.

Batting cages are available by walk up with no reservation required for general use. All cages are token operated. If you’d like to reserve a specific speed cage for yourself, a group, or team, please click on the form link below. Submission of the form does not guarantee rental. Our Park Management Team will follow up within 48 hours of your request to confirm availability. Payment must be made at the Batting Cage hut upon arrival.

Family Visits/Farm Tours

The park is open Tuesday through Sunday from April through September for free visits; the park is closed on Mondays. Temple Hall Farm Regional Park is an excellent place to bring the whole family. There are a wide variety of unique farm animals and beautiful views in every direction. Grab a scavenger hunt and take a self-guided farm tour. The majority of the farmyard paths are wheelchair/stroller-friendly stone dust, with some areas of grass to traverse.

Playground, Hill Slides, and Jumping Pillows

Temple Hall Farm has a variety of play equipment to enjoy. The playground is fun for all ages, with slides, swings, and multiple climbing features, conveniently located across from the Symington Center and indoor restrooms. Slide down our giant hill slides after taking in the view from the slide tower, and get some energy out on our jumping pillows. There are also several playhouses to spark your kid’s imagination.

Camp Overlook

Camp Overlook explores the close-to-home natural world with children ages 5 to 15 at Potomac Overlook Regional Park. Our camp staff works hard to create a curriculum that weaves unique activities and investigations with familiar annual traditions. Activities at Camp Overlook are designed to be engaging, challenging, educational, and fun! We highly value and encourage inclusion of all campers in all activities. Engaging activities include live animal interactions, nature hikes, team games, survival skills, scavenger hunts, nature crafts, field trips to other parks, and much more!

The Nature Center at Potomac Overlook houses a suite of interactive exhibits that highlight the connection between the human world and the natural world. The James I. Interpretive Gardens

Potomac Overlook Regional Park enjoys successful collaborations with both the Master Gardeners of Northern Virginia and the Arlington Regional Master Naturalists, to maintain interpretive gardens that patrons can visit.  The park’s many environmental and cultural activities draw people to the gardens, as do school field trips and summer nature camps.

Mini Golf

Pohick Bay Regional Park is home to Treasure Island Mini Golf! This fun, yet somewhat challenging miniature golf course is located near the large parking lot along Pohick Bay Drive, between the gatehouse and the boat launch. Like the waterpark, the mini golf course has a pirate theme that’ll leave you longing for the high seas! Ahoy!
