Washington and Old Dominion Railroad Regional Park
Snow Removal
NOVA Parks works to keep the W&OD Trail accessible during winter, but snow and ice removal is challenging due to weather variability and limited resources.
General Approach
- Most snowfalls melt quickly, but prolonged cold or shaded areas may require clearing.
- Plow blades are not used to avoid damaging the trail surface.
- Sand and salt are applied only in difficult spots to prevent surface issues.
When We Clear
- If snowfall exceeds 3 inches and is likely to remain, staff will begin clearing the paved trail and intersections within two weeks after the storm ends.
- Clearing starts in Arlington and moves west with a focus on road crossings first.
- Priority may shift to storm-related debris removal.
How We Clear
- Snow blowers are used on the paved trail.
- Intersections and curb cuts are cleared where highway plows leave large piles.
- Bridges may remain slippery despite efforts to shovel.
- The Bridle Trail is not cleared.
Limitations
- Trails will not be cleared to bare pavement.
- Operations occur during regular weekday shifts.
- Equipment and staffing constraints may cause delays.
Additional Notes
- Brine may be applied before storms to reduce ice bonding.
- Jurisdictions may clear sections under a formal agreement with NOVA Parks.
