Kokedama Workshop: Planting a Living Vessel

Kokedama Moss balls with various plants
Next Date
-
Kokedama—“moss ball”—is a centuries-old Japanese garden art rooted in the bonsai tradition and the philosophy of wabi-sabi, which honors beauty in simplicity and imperfection. Plants are grown without pots, their roots wrapped in soil and moss to form a living, sculptural sphere.

This make-and-take workshop begins with a brief visual introduction and demonstration, offering guidance on materials, technique, and care. Participants then shape their own Kokedama using natural, biodegradable substrates and living moss, working slowly and intentionally with hands and soil. Instruction and support are available throughout the process.

Each finished Kokedama is paired with a simple ceramic saucer, provided to beautifully display the piece as a quiet focal point in the home. No prior experience is needed—only patience, curiosity, and a willingness to work with natural materials. The program will be held outdoors at the Children’s Picnic Pavilion, with an indoor location available in case of inclement weather.
