School Programs
Aldie Mill Historic Park offers educational programs that meet Virginia Standards of Learning while engaging students of all grade levels. Programs are offered by appointment, April through October, Monday through Friday between 10:00 am-3:00 pm.*
Programs
“It Takes a Village: Community Life” for K- 2nd Graders

Students will learn about the community of farmers, tradespeople, and merchants that lived in and around Aldie during the 19th and 20th century.

Students will learn about geography and transportation determining the location of the mill, and how the Little River and Little River Turnpike linked Aldie to the port of Alexandria.

Students will learn the merchant mill in Aldie is the largest grist mill ever built in Loudoun County and the only restored example of a mill with tandem overshot waterwheels in Virginia.

Students will learn about the social and commercial lives of Virginians during the 19th and 20th centuries.
Simple Machines for 3rd Graders

Students will learn about Oliver Evans’ Automated Milling process and early American industry.

Students will investigate simple machines inside the merchant mill and understand how they are used to make the milling process more efficient.

Students will learn how gravity and forces of nature are central to powering the mill.
“Civil War in Aldie” Two Site Educational Program for 4th Grade+

Students will learn about the significant military actions that took place between Union and Confederate forces in Aldie in 1863 and 1864.

Students will learn about how the war impacted the community in Aldie, including Aldie Mills’ owner Captain John Moore.

Students will hear diaries and letters from women who lived in Loudoun County during the Civil War.

Students will tour the interior of Aldie Mill and Mt. Zion Old School Baptist Church while learning the history of the buildings and events related to the Civil War.
