Join public historian Nancy Spannaus for a lecture about the mill’s founder, Charles Fenton Mercer, and his remarkable impact on Loudoun County, Virginia, and the nation.

Mercer (1778–1858) entered Virginia politics in 1810 as a Federalist delegate from Loudoun County to the House of Burgesses. In 1817, he was elected to the U.S. Congress as a Federalist representative for Loudoun County. However, Mercer quickly aligned himself with the nationalist wing of the Democratic-Republican Party, where he served until 1838, championing internal improvements and expanded voting rights.

Drawing from her acclaimed books, "Hamilton Versus Wall Street" and "Defeating Slavery," Spannaus will unveil a surprising chapter of Loudoun history, when it stood as a Federalist stronghold in Virginia.

This lecture will be held inside the merchant mill at Aldie Mill Historic Park.
No preregistration required. $10 per person. Cash only.
