Enjoy a special lecture about local Civil War history featuring author Eric Buckland inside the church at Mount Zion Historic Park.

Before the Civil War, John Singleton Mosby was a committed Unionist. However, when Virginia seceded, he promptly aligned himself with the Confederacy. Alexander G. “Yankee” Davis, originally from Connecticut, had settled in Virginia by 1850. A vocal opponent of slavery, Davis did not shy away from expressing his views when war broke out in 1861. Although he was not initially engaged in the conflict, a violent encounter with Confederate supporters compelled him to join the Union effort as a scout. He later led Union cavalry raids against Mosby’s Rangers.

These compelling figures, along with two others, are the focus of Buckland’s presentation, which explores the tangled web of loyalties and the escalating dangers.
