Enjoy a special series of programs exploring the life, legacy, and local connections of Colonel James Monroe, America’s 5th president and Aldie resident. Each program features a live portrayal of Monroe by historian Jay Harrison.

  • All programs will be held in the merchant mill on the main level and will begin at 1:00 pm. 
  • Admission fee is $20 for adults (cash only); students admitted free of charge.

June 28: James Monroe and the Monroe Doctrine
Understanding the origins and global impact of Monroe’s most
influential policy. Featuring Scott Harris, Executive
Director of University of Mary Washington Museums.

August 9: The Enslaved at Oak Hill
Examining the lives and experiences of the enslaved at
Monroe’s estate. Featuring historians Lori Kimball, Wynne
Saffer, and Emily Stanfill.

September 13: Monroe and Indigenous Americans
A discussion of Monroe’s policies and their effects on first
peoples.

October 18: Elizabeth and James Monroe
A portrait of the Monroes’ partnership, influence, and public
life.

November 15: James Monroe and Charles Fenton Mercer
Exploring Monroe’s relationship with fellow Virginian and
political ally, Charles Fenton Mercer.
