In 2017 Carlyle House Historic Park undertook a new research project to improve their knowledge and interpretation of the site’s enslaved population. Join Maddy McCoy, founder of Slavery Inventory Database, LLC, for an illuminating tour on the new research of the enslaved community at Carlyle House.  Conversation about identifying enslaved individuals and their communities and putting that into a historical and genealogical context.

Home with the Herberts

Carlyle House Historic Park, Alexandria, VA

John Carlyle’s son-in-law, William Herbert, immigrated to America from Ireland and married Sarah Carlyle. He became an influential merchant, banker, and politician in Alexandria, resigning as Mayor on the eve of the War of 1812. Step back in time to see what life was like in the 19th century in Alexandria, and to learn more about this part of Carlyle’s family life.

The “Grandest Congress”: The French and Indian War in Alexandria

Carlyle House Historic Park, Alexandria, VA

Spring, 1755: Major General Edward Braddock, Commander-in-Chief of His Majesty’s Forces in North America, landed in Alexandria on March 26th to assume command of all North American military forces.  He lodged at the grandest dwelling in town, Carlyle House. While staying at Carlyle House, Braddock convened a meeting of five colonial governors.

Carlyle’s Perfectly Paired Chocolate & Wine Tasting

Carlyle House Historic Park, Alexandria, VA

What goes better with wine than chocolate? Join Potomac Chocolate on the Magnolia Terrace for an evening of locally made chocolates paired with delicious wines. There will also be small snacks that guests can enjoy between their wine and chocolate. Tours of the house will run from 6:30pm-7pm with the tasting being promptly at 7pm.
